Large-scale public artwork in Braga, Portugal
Commissioned by Câmara Municipal de Braga in 2022, Best Friends is a large-scale vertical mural located within the historic centre of Braga, Portugal.
Developed as part of Braga – Culture Capital of the Atlantic Axis, the project introduced a contemporary intervention within a historically and architecturally layered setting.
Context
The mural sits within Braga’s historic core, surrounded by religious architecture and traditional façades. The location required sensitivity to both scale and cultural tone.
While part of a wider public art programme, the commission focused on addressing a specific architectural challenge within the city fabric.
Composition and Integration
The wall is tall, narrow and interrupted by projecting architectural elements. Its corrugated metal surface introduces additional visual disruption.
The composition responds directly to this vertical constraint. Two abstracted canine figures are stacked one atop the other, creating a sense of balance and support.
These figures first appeared in smaller studio paintings. Scaling them up meant rethinking the relationships, adjusting the balance, and restructuring the forms so they could sit comfortably within the tall, narrow façade.
Colour was selected to introduce vibrancy while aligning with tones already present in the surrounding buildings. The mural integrates into its context rather than competing with it.
Production and Delivery
The project was delivered internationally over four days using aerosol paint and a large cherry picker to navigate the height and access constraints.
The corrugated surface required adaptive application techniques to maintain clarity across changing light conditions and viewing distances.
Long-term experience delivering complex public works through Absolutely Studio enabled the mural to be executed efficiently despite the technical challenges of scale, access and material.
Outcome
Best Friends operates as a vertical landmark within Braga’s historic centre.
The mural transforms a previously fragmented façade into a cohesive visual anchor, introducing contemporary identity while remaining respectful of its architectural surroundings.
The work demonstrates how disciplined composition and calibrated colour can introduce presence without excess, even within conservative or historically sensitive contexts.
