The Parallax Intervention series sees a move away from the bold outlined works from Darren’s previous studio output. In favour of these hard-edged cartooned features, these works have a more selective approach to their line-work, allowing more space for suggestive compositions and formplay.
The intervention element is evident in the bordered edges around each of the paintings. Their relationship to the inner ‘windows’ and sometimes lack of. In using this dynamic Darren is showing us that you can find portals to the more curious and playful pockets of your imagination anywhere – no matter the distraction.
The paintings in this pair balance the vibrancy of the light pink with turquoise, alongside the warm majestic golden tones. Vibrant imagery that is impossible to ignore and is a step away from a primary pallet.
The playful outer edge of these pieces have been made by dipping sponge balls in to black paint, which are then thrown at distance to create an organic polka dot border. This is Darren leading by example in his studio practice by re-purposing what’s around him. This plays to his regular approach to innovating with what tools can be used to make new and interesting marks in the studio. Although this approach to painting is more in line with action painting, it actually nods to Darren’s upbringing playing simple ball games like curby and catch.
